Milk thistle seed meal is a natural, herbal-based feed supplement that supports liver protection, digestion and the body’s detoxification processes.
The seeds of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) contain silymarin, a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that contributes to liver cell regeneration and helps neutralize harmful substances.
Why do we recommend milk thistle seed meal for horses?
First of all, it is a 100% natural liver-support supplement.
During our product development, we use it in many formulations due to its proven benefits. When fed on its own, it supports liver function—especially after exposure to medications, toxins, heavy metals or mold-contaminated feed.
Secondly, it supports digestion by promoting proper bile flow and fat metabolism, helping to reduce bloating and digestive discomfort.
In addition, it protects cells against oxidative stress, which is particularly important for sport horses and senior horses.
When and for which horses do we recommend feeding milk thistle seed meal?
- sport and competition horses exposed to higher physical workload
- senior horses with reduced liver efficiency
- after medical treatments or deworming, to support liver regeneration
- horses exposed to mold-contaminated feed or those with sensitive digestion
For horses suffering from more serious digestive or metabolic disorders, or when stronger detoxification or liver support is required, we recommend feeding our HEPASHIELD supplement with its more complex formulation and broader effects.

Practical experience
The effects are not always immediately visible, except through blood test results.
After approximately 1–2 weeks of continuous feeding, improvements in liver parameters can often be detected. After 3–4 weeks, visible improvements may be noticed in overall appearance, digestion and body condition.
We recommend using milk thistle seed meal as a general supportive supplement in longer courses (approximately 3 months), twice per year—typically in October/November and March/April.
For accuracy, it should be noted that every horse is different, and in biology, 1 + 1 does not always equal 2
One 3 kg pack of milk thistle seed meal provides approximately 50 days of feeding for an average 500 kg horse.
